Newburn Bakehouse – Gluten Free Crumpets Review

A short while ago, Newburn Bakehouse announced their latest gluten free product – crumpets! Crumpets are one of the things I miss since my Coeliac diagnosis and although Genius offer a very nice gluten free crumpet, it has never quite matched the gluten filled original.

If you haven’t heard of Newburn Bakehouse, they are the gluten free, milk free and wheat free brand from the bready giants Warburtons.

I was pretty excited to try the new crumpets so when I saw the last packet on the shelf today in Sainsburys, I practically skipped to the shelf to grab them (believe me, I would have willingly pushed an old lady out of the way to get them) and this lunchtime I finally got to try them.

They cost £2.00 for 4 in Sainsburys today, which isn’t too bad until you take into consideration that 9 non gluten free crumpets by Warburtons only cost £1.20. They are no different in shape or size. Gluten is just obviously cheaper (When will gluten free foods become competively priced????)

They look smell and feel like normal crumpets, maybe a little denser though and they are gluten free, wheat free and milk free.

I toasted mine (we use toaster bags to avoid cross contamination) and added ALOT of butter, there is nothing quite like a hot buttered crumpet, I was quite excited by this point. I had high hopes.

So it still looks and smells like a crumpet and unlike the Genius crumpets, they have proper holes that the butter all melts into (Honestly, I do like the Genius crumpets but they are quite potatoey and don’t have quite the right texture).

I took my first bite. I wasn’t disappointed and although still not quite like the original, gluteny crumpet, it wasn’t far off.

The verdict? I really like these new gluten free crumpets from Newburn Bakehouse. They are really quite nice and although I will forever hold a special place in my heart for the crumpet that will make me violently ill, these are a pretty good substitute.

Have you tried these? What did you think? Let me know below.

I’ve been eating the Genius crumpets for a while, but thought I’d give these a go. Ate the first 2 yesterday, struggled towards the end. At the other 2 today, but seriously considered binning them and going back to Genius. Thankfully I had only bought one pack. I’m a Genius girl I’m afraid.

Ooh! That’s really interesting, my husband who isn’t gluten free prefers the genius ones as well! My mum also said the warburtons ones taste ‘earthy’ – I think warburtons have the crumpet texture I miss the most! Xx
