Prezzo, Plymouth – Review

A few weeks ago, I treated my husband Neil to lunch at Prezzo in the beautiful Royal William Yard in Plymouth.

I’ve eaten here a few times, once since I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease so we thought we’d give it a go for lunch on a rainy Sunday.

Prezzo have over 250 restaurants across the country, offering modern Italian dining. Prezzo are acredited by Coeliac UK so if you follow a gluten free diet or suffer from an intolerance you can feel that little bit safer about eating here.

The inside of Prezzo in Royal William Yard is lovely, with the original stone walls, windows and ceiling beams of what would have been the Yard’s mill it offers a very relaxed and cosy dining atmosphere, with the windows looking out into the yard or out into the sound, it really is a very nice place to relax with friends and family.

You can see across into the kitchen as well and watching them use the huge pizza oven is fascinating.

My starter, accompanied by a very nice glass of Prosecco was gluten free Large Pane Con Cipolla, which is garlic bread topped with balsamic onions and mozarella.

It tastes wonderful. It has a perfect amount of very tasty balsamic onions on the top. The dough is light and crispy (some gluten free dough can sit very heavy in your stomach and tends to be a bit claggy). It doesn’t taste at all gluten free which is always an added bonus for a Coeliac like me!

My main was Pappardelle Gorgonzola – chicken, pancetta, leeks, broccoli and parsley in a creamy gorgonzola sauce with Prezzo’s gluten free pasta. I’m really into leeks at the moment and this dish is a delight.

I used to be a huge fan of pasta, it was literally one of my five a day for many years and I’ve had numerous bad gluten free pasta experiences so when you get something as tasty as Prezzo’s offering it gives me a little glow! (Another amazing gluten free pasta is available at Carluccio’s – a very similar offering to Prezzo, read my review here)

The pasta is light and not sticky or too starchy and the leeks, chicken and all the other bits go together so well, I could gladly eat this dish every day.

Desert was a pretty limited choice as it often is for the gluten free amongst us. I decided to end with some ice cream, even though I was already pretty full!

The ice cream was nice, as most ice creams are. I would like to see a better gluten free desert choice here but as with so many restaurants, I am usually just so grateful to see a gluten free starter and main option that desert isn’t a particularly big deal for me.

Neil enjoyed his meal as well!

We also used our Tastecard (well worth getting one of these if you eat out alot, you can get some really good deals) which we get through our bank so we got 2 for 1 on each course bringing our 3 course lunch and drinks to around £30.00. Bargain.

All in all, it was a lovely meal, staff are friendly and service was efficient. It is a beautiful setting to enjoy a meal and the gluten free choice (which includes pizza’s) was really good. We have already been back since and will definitely be going again.

I love a good pizza/pasta dish! I think it’s brilliant that restaurants are starting to offer such a wide range of dishes for food intolerances.

I agree! I always worry about going out with an intolerance so it’s good to know that more and more places can cope!
